THE CRISIS AT CALIFORNIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AT
RIVERSIDE |
July
26 , 2001
OFFICIAL TERMINATION
Dear Stone Supporters:
The purpose of this letter is to let you know that on
July 26th, I received the official letter from Leslie
Fausset, Chief Deputy Superintendent, notifying me that
effective July 27, 2001, my exempt appointment as Site
Superintendent, School for the Deaf was terminated.
Copies were sent to Eastin, Der, Kadish, Legal Office,
CSDR Transactions Office, and Classifications Office.
The letter stated that I did not serve in a civil service
classification and that I do not have any return rights
to other state positions or classifications. I
would need to check for more information on benefits
on the state website. It was just one page with
no explanation or reasons for my termination
At the town hall meeting at CSDR on June 20th, Ronald
Kadish told the audience that he could not divulge the
information to anyone because of the state law and that
I must be informed first. He said I could share
the information with anyone after that. On June
25th during the rally, Delaine Eastin told several supporters
in her office at the Department of Education building
in Sacramento that I would receive the information with
reasons for my termination. Eastin and Kadish
have shared no information with me to this date.
.
I emailed Ms. Fausset on July 27th requesting that I
be provided the reasons for my termination. To
this date I still have not heard anything from her or
any other state officials.
I received a letter on August 10th from the CSDR personnel
office with a notice of personnel action report of separation:
termination with fault. Again, no explanation
was given.
Prior to my final termination, I was advised by some
individuals to submit my resignation to save my face.
After serious discussions, I chose not to resign due
to the following reasons.
1) If I resign, the state will say it was my decision
and they are under no obligation to share the information
with me or others, and they would claim that they had
nothing to do with my resignation.
2) They would state that they did not force me to resign.
3) If I choose to resign; it will appear that
it was my entire fault.
I still believe I did nothing wrong, violated no laws
nor jeopardized the procedure or system. Therefore,
I chose not to resign and have allowed the state to
terminate me instead. I hope to search for the
truth and to let it be known among you soon.
Thanks to many of you who made the donations to the
monetary fund to support rally and materials, plus travel
needs. Your effort and participation in those
rallies will always be appreciated. I also want
to thank those individuals for their contributions and
extra time: Deaf Children First Group: Zibby
Bayarasky, Dana Baldieviez, Juliet Maucere, Wendy Korn,
Juliet Maucere, and Pam Hakker for their meetings with
state officials, CSDR administration and organizations.
My appreciation goes to Nancy Moore for her work on
the 1st Year Anniversary Celebration and a large portrait
of me as the 4th Superintendent.
It has been a great experience knowing you and working
with you in different capacities. You and I have
the same desire: giving the ultimate education our students
deserve. Since I am no longer part of CSDR, I
will continue to contribute my time and assistance in
a different capacity. Please remember that
the students are still our top priority!
My sincere appreciation for everything you have done
or tried to do. I will never forget you.
Thank you for your patience and waiting to hear the
news about the events surrounding my termination.
Warmest regards,
Dr. Rachel E. Stone
