THE CRISIS AT CALIFORNIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AT
RIVERSIDE |
June 19, 2001
CSDR/Rachel Stone from other view.
When
you all send your emails regarding the Rachel Stone
situation at CSDR, please understand that this is not
a "deaf discrimination" or an
action against either ASL or Deaf Culture.
Rachel Stone was fired from her former position as the
Assistant Superintendent of the Indiana School for the
Deaf. She then applied
for, and received the position as the Superintendent
at CSDR in California, and engaged in many of the same
inappropriate actions that caused her to be fired in
Indiana.
Her bosses in Sacramento warned her several times, particularly
last December, to follow the state regulations, but
she continued to violate
the laws, regulations and policies in California, just
like she did previously in Indiana. Finally, after many
warnings, Sacramento had no
other choice. To protect the deaf students at CSDR,
and the teachers and staff, Sacramento has also now
fired Rachel Stone.
The termination is because this individual is simply
an inappropriate educational administrator. It would
have been the same for a hearing
person who was an inappropriate educational administrator.
Keep this in your mind when you write any letters to
the government agency people or the school districts,
because they already know this
background about Rachel Stone, and they are fully aware
that the termination was appropriate under the circumstances.
Also, please address your emails to the proper people
in the government, because the email list that was sent
out to everyone on Deaf California
News contains some email addresses that are NOT RELATED
to the Rachel Stone issue, or to CSDR.
It is appropriate to send emails, if you wish to do
so, to the Governor, Delaine Eastin, Mr. Der, and Mr.
Kadish, and also the Riverside School
District, with a copy, of course, to Rachel Stone.
It is NOT appropriate to send any emails about CSDR
or Rachel Stone to the Mayor of Riverside, the City
Council of Riverside, or to the
California State Senators or California State Representatives.
Those people have no power at all in regard to Rachel
Stone's employment, or
her position at CSDR.
Finally, please be aware that President Bush has made
a firm statement that the taxpayer-funded schools, all
over the United States, including
CSDR, are FOR THE STUDENTS, not for the benefit of administrators,
staff or faculty.
It is a national Education policy in the United States
to make sure that the STUDENTS receive proper education
in the English language, and for
foreign language courses to be taught only in separate
"foreign language classes" in the secondary
middle and high school levels, and also in
colleges and universities. Foreign languages are not
taught at the elementary
ASL is a designated foreign (non-English) foreign language
in the State of California. Therefore, the ASL foreign
language CANNOT be used in
regular classrooms anywhere within the State of California
-- it can only be used outside of classrooms, and also
in designated foreign
language courses at the secondary (middle and high school)
and college/university levels.
Please be aware of these facts, too, when you write
your letters to the government officials.
Thank you.
