THE CRISIS AT CALIFORNIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AT
RIVERSIDE |
June 19, 2001
Response
to Paulettle's letter
Hello Paulette,
We have never met, but I have been watching the action
at CSDR from the Bay Area for quite some time. I am
a hearing person working closely with the Deaf community.
Your dissemination of (seemingly incorrect) information
about Stone's former position at ISD is not only juvenile,
it is completely unprofessional. Your comment, "Therefore,
the ASL foreign language CANNOT be used in regular classrooms
anywhere within the State of California..." is
laughable, discriminatory and just plain heartless -
not to mention a poor use of English syntax. I also
understand you have experience interpreting at the University
level without any formal training and without R.I.D.
or
N.A.D. certification. If this is correct, then your
arrogance fascinates me! These actions are abhorrent
to all of us who work so hard to maintain equality for
Deaf people and high standards for children in Deaf
education. Along with many other hearing people following
this story, I am appalled at how this situation regarding
Rachel Stone is being handled. May you and your peers
gain enlightenment of your unconscious perceptions in
the near
future and soon realize that the answers to quality
education for Deaf children are ASL, Deaf administrators
and educators fluent in sign language.
Sincerely,
Derryn Grey, CI/CT
